Names of Crime and Punishment

For English-speaking students who encounter the novel Crime and Punishment, one new and often difficult element is the many name forms that characters can be called by. Classes and backs of books might even provide lists: for each character, here are all the names one might encounter for them. In this project for the Computational Methods in Humanities course at the University of Pittsburgh, our goal was to look beyond this kind of surface listing. What name-forms are in fact used for which characters, and by whom? What kinds of patterns can be seen here? And, given that in Russia, name form use comes with social connotations, what might be the significance of the patterns? Dostoyevsky
